What your number actually means
Speed tests give you a figure without context. Here is what each range supports for streaming television, with headroom left for everything else in the house.

Three fixes that cost nothing
Before upgrading your broadband package, these are worth trying. In our experience they resolve most streaming complaints without spending anything.
Wire the television
An ethernet adapter costs a few euro and does more for stability than any other single change. A 100 Mbps wired connection beats a 500 Mbps line over Wi-Fi at the far end of the house, consistently.
Use the 5 GHz band
If wiring isn't practical, connect to the 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz. Shorter range but far more capacity, and 2.4 GHz struggles to sustain a 4K stream reliably at any distance.
Restart the router
Unglamorous and often effective. Routers left running for months accumulate problems that a thirty-second power cycle clears. Do the streaming device at the same time.
Speed test questions
Advertised speeds are what the line can deliver in ideal conditions. What reaches a device depends on Wi-Fi, distance from the router, other people in the house and contention on the local exchange. A gap between the two is normal rather than a fault.
Barely. Watching television is almost entirely download, so upload speed has very little bearing on picture quality or buffering. It matters for video calls and uploading files, which is why most packages advertise it prominently.

Broadband throughput fluctuates constantly with network conditions and other traffic in your home. Run it a few times and treat the range as the answer rather than any single figure. Consistency matters more than a peak reading.
Speed is only one factor. Wi-Fi instability, an underpowered device, or a player setting such as auto-play on channel change can all cause buffering on a fast line. Work through the device-side fixes in the relevant setup guide first.
Around 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K on one device, roughly doubling for two simultaneous streams. Most Irish fibre packages clear that comfortably — the more common limitation is Wi-Fi coverage rather than the line itself.
