Do you actually need a VPN?

Probably not. Most Irish connections stream perfectly well without one, and a VPN adds overhead that can make things slightly worse rather than better. This page shows you how to find out for certain before spending money on a problem you may not have.

The short answer

Test without one first

A VPN helps with exactly one streaming problem: an internet provider deliberately slowing video traffic at busy times. That does happen, but it's far less common on Irish fibre than the internet suggests.

Every other cause of buffering — a slow line, weak Wi-Fi, an underpowered device, evening congestion on the local exchange — is either unaffected by a VPN or made worse by one, because encryption and rerouting cost you speed. Set up without one, see how it performs, and only then run the test below.

How to tell if you're actually throttled

This takes about ten minutes and gives you a definite answer. The logic is simple: if encrypting and rerouting your traffic makes it faster, something was slowing it down when it could see what it was.

Test at a quiet time first

Run a speed test around 10am or 11am on a weekday, from the device you watch on rather than a phone in another room. Write the number down. This is your line at its best, and it's the baseline everything else compares against.

Test again at peak — around 9pm

Same device, same test. Irish broadband is most contended between roughly 7pm and 11pm. A drop here is normal and affects everything equally — it's congestion, not throttling.

Now test at peak with a VPN switched on

Use a free trial from any reputable provider — you don't need to buy anything yet. Connect to a nearby server, ideally Ireland or the UK, and run the same test at the same time of evening.

Compare the two evening numbers

This is the answer. A VPN always costs you some speed through encryption overhead, so it should be slightly slower than without. If it comes back faster, that's the signature of traffic shaping.

Your provider isn't singling out video traffic. Any buffering is coming from somewhere else — bandwidth, Wi-Fi or the device. A VPN would make it worse, not better. Work through the fixes further down instead.

A VPN is doing real work here and is worth paying for. Repeat the test on another evening before committing, since a single measurement can mislead — then pick a provider using the criteria below.

What a VPN fixes — and what it doesn't

A great deal of advice online treats a VPN as a general cure for buffering. It isn't. Here's what it actually changes.

A VPN always costs you some speed. Encrypting every packet and routing it through another server adds overhead — typically a modest reduction on a good connection, more on a poor one. That's a fair trade when throttling is the problem, and pure loss when it isn't.

Three fixes that cost nothing

In our experience these resolve the large majority of buffering complaints, and all three are free or nearly free. Work through them before considering a subscription to anything.

FIX 01

Wire the television

An ethernet adapter costs a few euro and does more for stability than any other single change. A 100 Mbps wired connection beats a 500 Mbps line over Wi-Fi at the far end of the house, every time.

Move to the 5 GHz band

If wiring isn't practical, connect to the 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz. Shorter range but far more capacity, and 2.4 GHz struggles to sustain a 4K stream reliably at distance.

Restart the device weekly

Streaming sticks degrade when left running for weeks. Unplug for thirty seconds and plug back in. Unglamorous, free, and it prevents most of the performance complaints we see.

What to look for in a VPN

We don't sell VPNs, take commission from any, or recommend a particular one — providers change hands and performance shifts, so a fixed recommendation would go stale. These are the criteria that matter for streaming specifically.

Servers in Ireland or the UKDistance costs latency. A nearby server keeps the speed penalty small; connecting through another continent does not.
A native app for your deviceFirestick and Android TV apps matter. Router-level setups work but slow every device in the house, including the ones that don't need it.
Modern protocol supportNewer protocols such as WireGuard are noticeably faster than older ones for high-bandwidth video.
A refund window or free trialTest it on your own line before committing. If it doesn't measurably improve things, take the refund.
Free VPNs are a poor fit for streaming. They're typically bandwidth-capped, heavily congested, and slower than the connection you started with. Fine for the ten-minute diagnostic test above; not for watching anything.
