IPTV setup on an Android TV box
Nvidia Shield, Mi Box, Chromecast with Google TV and the generic boxes sold online. Which route you take depends entirely on which kind you have — and that's the first thing to establish, because it changes everything that follows.
Which kind of box do you actually have?
"Android box" covers two quite different things. One is a properly certified device running Google's television build with a working Play Store. The other is a cheap box running a modified phone version of Android with no certification and often no store at all. Both are sold as Android TV boxes; only one of them is straightforward.
Android TV or Google TV
Has a working Google Play Store on the home screen and a proper television interface. Setup takes about five minutes because the players are simply in the store.

Unbranded Android boxes
Usually run a phone version of Android with a custom launcher. No certified Play Store, so apps have to be sideloaded. They work, but expect a longer setup.
- Boxes branded T95, X96, H96, MXQ and similar
- Anything sold as an "Android TV box" without a named manufacturer
- Often ship with an outdated Android version
- May include pre-installed apps you did not ask for
Five steps to watching
Check the Android version
Worth thirty seconds before you start, because it determines which players will install. Anything on Android 8 or later handles current versions of the main apps comfortably.

- Look for Android version in the list
- Android 8 or later — everything in this guide works
- Android 5 to 7 — most players still install, some newer versions won't
- Below Android 5 — the box is too old; a Firestick is the simpler answer
Install a player
On a certified box this is a normal store install. On a generic box you'll need to sideload, which works the same way as on a Firestick.

Settings › Security & restrictions, install Downloader, and fetch the app from the developer's own website. Never from a third-party APK mirror. The Firestick guide covers the same process in detail.
Enter your credentials
Open the player and add a playlist. Use Xtream Codes wherever the app offers it, since it loads the programme guide and sorts the film library automatically.
- Enter the server URL, username and password exactly as sent — they are case-sensitive
- Include
http://and the port number if one was supplied - A large lineup takes up to a minute to load the first time
Set the device time zone
Do this on the box itself rather than only in the player. TiviMate in particular takes its time zone from the device, so a wrong box clock produces a guide that's an hour out no matter what the app says.
Settings›Device Preferences›Date & time
- Set the time zone to Dublin, and enable automatic date & time
- Avoid a fixed GMT offset — it goes an hour out every summer when Ireland moves to Irish Standard Time
- Then enable automatic EPG update inside the player
Check the display output
This one is specific to boxes and it's frequently missed. Many ship set to 1080p output regardless of the television attached, so a 4K set displays an upscaled HD picture and the owner concludes the stream isn't really 4K.

- Set resolution to 3840 × 2160 if your television supports it
- Choose a 50 Hz mode where offered — European broadcast is 50 Hz, and 60 Hz can produce slight judder on motion
- Use an HDMI 2.0 port on the television; many sets have a mix and only some carry full 4K bandwidth
What each box handles well
Ranked by how much headroom they have on high-bitrate 4K channels, which is where differences between boxes actually show.

If something isn't right
Player won't install from Play Store
Usually an uncertified box — the store present isn't the real Play Store, or the app isn't listed for that device. Sideload via Downloader from the developer's own site instead.
Picture is only 1080p on a 4K TV
Check Display & Sound on the box and set resolution to 3840 × 2160. Many boxes default to 1080p output regardless of the television attached, which looks exactly like a low-quality stream.
Remote doesn't work properly in the app
Common on generic boxes running phone Android, where apps expect a touchscreen. A Bluetooth remote with a directional pad, or an air mouse, resolves it. Certified boxes don't have this problem.
Box slows down over time
Clear the player's cache in device settings, then restart at the plug. Cheaper boxes with limited memory benefit from a weekly restart, same as a Firestick.
Android box questions
The Nvidia Shield handles high-bitrate 4K with the most headroom and includes an ethernet port, which matters more than raw speed for stability. Chromecast with Google TV is the better value option, and a Mi Box is adequate for most viewing.
Not on a certified device. Nvidia Shield, Chromecast with Google TV, Mi Box and Android TVs have a working Play Store, so players install normally. Generic unbranded boxes usually need sideloading because they lack a certified store.
Many boxes default to 1080p output regardless of the television attached. Go to Display and Sound in the device settings and set the resolution to 3840 by 2160. Also make sure the box is in an HDMI 2.0 port on the television.
Generic boxes often ship with modified firmware and pre-installed software of unknown origin. If yours arrived loaded with apps you did not choose, consider a factory reset before setting anything up. A certified device costs a little more and behaves predictably.
TiviMate, if your box has a working Play Store. It has a better guide layout and channel management, and unlike on a Firestick it usually installs directly from the store. Use IPTV Smarters on generic boxes where sideloading is needed anyway.
For heavy 4K viewing, yes — a good box has more processing headroom and often a built-in ethernet port, which is the single biggest factor in stream stability. For ordinary HD viewing the difference is small and a Firestick is fine.
